Asinat a ten years old girl, full of energy, always talking, always smiling, always attracting people into her world.
You would feel her presence instantly when she arrives to the Center. She has always been someone who brings others together. A natural light that never requested attention.
Then cancer though forced her into isolation. Six long months away from touch and normal childhood moments. Her body weakened. Her immunity fragile. But she remained contained and steady.
When she was finally allowed to leave isolation, after those 6 long months, it felt as though she returned from another world. It was indeed a heavy phase.
However, coming back it was something joyful to Asinat, She was happy to see again the people she loves, to touch them, to speak to them. She came back with laughter, stories, and the same warmth that made people gravitate towards her.
She was still the same Asinat.
But was the world the same?
A short message arrived with devastating news: Asinat’s friend had passed away from cancer.
Despite the effort, her eyes carried a quiet sadness that hadn’t been there before.
Her light hadn’t disappeared yet. It had softened.
Her mother said it gently: “She’s quieter now. But she’s determined to keep going. She’s living for both of them.”
And suddenly, it became clear. Asinat wasn’t only fighting cancer. She was carrying grief.
Because cancer doesn’t affect the body only. It leaves invisible wounds as the loss of a friend, the pain of separation, of broken dreams.
Today, Asinat continues her journey, not only for herself, but for the friend she lost too.
She reminds us that we are never fighting just one battle. Sometimes, we are fighting for much more.
